Coatesville City was originally known as "Bridge-Town", after the two bridges spanning the Brandywine River. It was also known as "Midway", due to its rail station, located midway between Philadelphia and Lancaster. The City, the only one in Chester County, encompasses approximately two square miles and is adjacent to Caln Township on the east side.
